Gross Tonnage: 228

Breadth: 23.1 ft
Depth: 11.5 ft
Built: Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Beverley
Engine: Mirlees Bickerton & Day developing 484bhp
Speed: 12 knots

History

1960: Completed by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Beverley (Yd. No. 960) for the Hewett Fishing Co Ltd, Fleetwood, as ROYALIST. Registered at London LO50.
1993: Owned by the Anglo-Spanish company Flagperry Ltd, Milford and operating as a netter after her conversion in Spain. Her operating base is shown as ‘Spain’ but we know that they had to land a certain number of catches in UK in order to comply with UK registration. The catch was then trucked to Spain.
23.01.2008: Flooded and sank during fishing operations when approximately 180nm off Dingle, Ireland. ROYALIST was about to shoot her nets when she was hit by a large wave on her port side, which caused her to heel to starboard. The vessel was starting to return to the upright when she was hit by a second wave, after which she took on a permanent list due to the amount of water on her main deck and within an accommodation alleyway.

The list increased as water continued to wash over the vessel’s submerged starboard gunwale and was able to progress into the engine room and aft accommodation, by way of an open net hatch. Although the crew attempted to stem the flow of water by closing the net hatch, the vessel started to sink.

At 1553, the skipper sent distress messages on Inmarsat C and VHF radio channels 13 and 16, and ordered his crew to abandon the vessel into the vessel’s two liferafts. The skipper of the French fishing vessel DAMAFRAN, which was fishing about 5 miles to the south, heard the distress message and immediately cut his nets and headed for the stricken vessel. At 1645, ROYALIST’S 18 crew were recovered by DAMAFRAN. ROYALIST sank by her stern 25 minutes later.

The DINAS was towed back to Fleetwood by the STARELLA H219 which had also sailed on the same tide.
At the inquest it was found the fire was started deliberately and 3 men were given 5 year jail sentences each for manslaughter
11.1971. Returned to service after refit on the Clyde.

Addendum.
A couple of men who sailed in the DINAS after her refit and said she was a very eerie ship and struggled to get crews this is why she was transferred to Aberdeen.
A local story is that when the DINAS was built supposedly a gold sovereign was placed under the foremast and when she was scrapped the gold sovereign was to be given to Marr’s superintendant engineer at Fleetwood Jimmy Meuse. When the mast was lifted there was no gold sovereign there. Fact or fiction?

Lost: Fred Brierley, Robert Campbell, Stanley M Gray, George Jones and Basil C Spriggs.

Gross Tonnage: 61
Length: 70 ft

History

1955: Built by Mashford’s (CREMYLL SHIP YARD) Cremyll,Torpoint, Cornwall
1955: Keel laid.
1956: Registered at Plymouth (PH5).
1964 moved to Fleetwood
1967 under tow to Glasson when the tow parted and she was wrecked on Pilling Sands. Vessel broken up on Knott End beach.

Notes from Melvyn Lloyd.
The 70ft Hamoaze PH5 was the first trawler to be built in Plymouth after WW2.
Her principal owner and Skipper was Archie Jennings (who was my Uncle) his mate and partner was his son-in-law Jack Forster.
My father and I went on her first sea trial and me being only 13 yrs old it made a great impression on me.
Hamoaze was equipped with a fish sonar and Archie took great pains in explaining to me how it worked
and gave me some of the print-offs to take home.
I also recall that Archie was not enamoured by the builders who had concreted in the ballast, other than that he was pleased with the vessel.
Previous to moving back to Plymouth Archie skippered trawlers out of Milford Avon throughout the war and after on 14 day trips. His hobby was embroidery, I presume that this was a take-on from mending nets.
